Downtown Rapids Coach Dr. Emmanuel Ayim, Successfully Earns Pro B License
From December 11th 2010 to December 19th 2010, thirty-six ex-professional and current professional soccer players who are now coaches, convened at the Home Depot Center for a week long course to earn a USSF B License.
Unlike other general license courses that are publicly advertised, coaches and coaches to be, must have prior professional playing experience to attend this course. Utilizing the state of the art facilities at the Home Depot Center, the week was filled with learning
methods of coaching soccer and sharing ideas gleaned from the diverse playing backgrounds. The week was particularly enjoyable for Downtown Rapids Coach Dr. Emmanuel Ayim, better known as “eman” in soccer circles. He had the opportunity to coach alongside and play again with former US U-20 National Team teammates Taylor Twellman and Danny Califf. Additionally, he learned alongside University of Dayton teammate and 2005 MLS Cup Champion with the LA Galaxy Michael Nsien.
For Eman, the course underscored the philosophy of Downtown Rapids, which promotes player development and coaching education. The club finances the trip and other licensing courses, which allows coaches to learn from the best soccer minds America has to offer. The beauty in this concept is that Downtown Rapids coaches attend these courses and obtain soccer knowledge that is brought back to the club. The end result is better coaches who develop better players. In short, Eman could hardly wait to get back to Las Vegas and apply what he learned with his team. After all, isn’t wisdom the application of knowledge?

MLS/SUM Cup ResultsGame 1: Colorado Rapids v San Jose Earthquakes
The Rapids U17 team opened the 2010 MLS/SUM Cup with a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes tonight at the Centennial Soccer Park in Houston.
The Rapids were off to a quick start, four and a half minutes in, when James Rogers calmly lifted the ball over the San Jose goalkeeper. The Rapids dominated early possession and threatened several more times in the first fifteen minutes with Rogers and Downtown’s Juan Carlos Regalado looking dangerous in the attack.
Matt Polster, who is with the Rapids from the Adidas Alliance team the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club, unfortunately suffered a fractured fibula 16 minutes into the first half. While awaiting approval for his substitute to enter the field, San Jose tied up the score. Polster's replacement, Dillon Serna was quick to make an impact though, finding Rogers behind the Earthquake defense in the 20th minute and the Rapids would again take the lead.
The Rapids continued their first half dominance when Andy Rodriguez, another player from Downtown Las Veas Soccer Club, found Velez at the right side of the box. Velez’s quick feet momentarily freed him before he was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty. Velez took the penalty, himself, and the Rapids would find themselves up 3-1.
Several second half changes were necessary for both teams in the heat and humidity of Houston. The second half was played without many opportunities created until San Jose’s Sam Eng headed home a corner kick with 10 minutes remaining to give them life. Rapids held tight for the remainder of the game to clench three points.
Game 2: Colorado Rapids v D.C. United
The Rapids U17 lost 2-1 to defending champions DC United tonight at Centennial Soccer Complex in Houston.
Colorado's young team, which includes 14 year old starting goalkeeper, Andrew Epstein, went a goal down early in the game after a fast start from DC. The Rapids responded well their grit was rewarded in the 18th minute when Austin Seifert fought through a hard DC challenge to help the ball on to Eric Kronenberg who was able to get a touch over the onrushing goalkeeper to draw the game level.
The final minutes of the first half saw both teams with moments of sustained possession but no one could break through.
The second half was an open affair with both teams pressing for the win. Epstein came up big on a corner kick in the 40’ minute and again a minutes later with a reaction save to his left. The Rapids looked to go ahead five minutes later when Juan Carlos Regalado found himself behind the United defense but fired high. Dillon Serna misconnected on a volley from close range with five minutes remaining. DC found the winner in the last minute of the game when they pounced on a Rapids mistake and sent a quick cross to the far post for an easy header into the back of the net.
Game 3: Colorado Rapids v Chicago Fire The Rapids U17 team drew 2-2 with the Chicago Fire in Sum Cup action on Monday night in Houston.
Chicago then took the bonus point for beating Colorado in penalty kicks and earned second place in the group.
The Rapids were able to take the lead the 11th minute. A corner from the right was won by Jordan Spring whose initial header was cleared off the line, but his second effort was not denied. The Rapids increased the lead in the 21st when Ricardo Perez beat the high Chicago line with a well timed ball to Rogers who slotted home the breakaway. Fire goalkeeper Sam Euler did well all night to keep his team in the game, and it paid off when the Fire pulled a goal back with 15 minutes to play. Colorado had a chance to finish the game in the 65th minute when Santiago Velez found himself alone on the end of another Rogers run into the box but could not tuck the ball past the keeper. Chicago pressed for the equalizer in the last 5 minutes and were rewarded when the referee gave a controversial penalty in the two minutes from time. Chicago calmly pushed the penalty past goalkeeper Andrew Epstein to earn the 2-2 draw. All five Chicago shooters scored in penalty kicks, with Colorado missing just once to claim the extra point.

The Colorado Rapids U17 team flew to Houston, Texas today to compete for the MLS Sum Cup. The Rapids U-17 team consists of 14-17 year-old players from the Rapids’ U.S. Developmental Academy Teams, as well as three players selected to the squad from the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club Alliance program. After spending the last five days with the squad in Denver, Mathew Polster, Andy Rodriguez and Juan Carlos Regalado Jnr trained with their Rapids team mates in Houston ahead of their opening game against the San Jose Earthquakes tomorrow evening.
The MLS U-17 Sum Cup is a youth tournament comprised exclusively of all 16 Major League Soccer’s Under-17 teams, with the winner of the tournament advancing to play in next year’s prestigious Torneo Quixote youth tournament in Spain and the runner up joining the SuperGroup of the popular Dallas Cup.
“The Cup is a great opportunity to test our team against MLS-specific competition,” said Brian Crookham, Director of Operations for the Rapids Youth Academy. “It is a very professional environment and we know the games will be very fast. Our group has last year’s MLS Sum Cup champion, D.C. United, and recently crowned U-16 national champion Chicago Fire, as well as a very good San Jose Earthquakes team. We are going to be tested in every game, so it is a great environment for the development of our players.”
For first time, the SUM Cup will be held somewhere other than the Rapids’ home complex, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, which hosted the first three editions of the tournament. The 2010 SUM U-17 Cup will be held at Houston’s Centennial Park complex from July 23-28, with the final taking place on July 28 at Reliant Stadium before the MLS All-Stars take on Manchester United in the 2010 MLS All-Star game.

One of the many highlights of the week was a presentation to the Downtown families outlining the age appropriate curriculum and the many player development programs that our players, coaches and parents can now fully benefit from. Following this meeting Roger Tabor, club president, hosted a coaches reception where the entire staff were able to share thoughts and ideas for the future progress of the Downtown Las Vegas Rapids organization. Thursday saw the Colorado Rapids press conference and press release at UNLV announcing the Las Vegas Alliance. This groundbreaking Alliance has brought the Rainbow Youth Soccer League, the Las Vegas Valley Soccer League and Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club together with the Colorado Rapids in the best interests of player development in the Las Vegas area. Brian Crookham and Steve Cooke were able to attend the Rainbow Youth Soccer League games on Saturday morning where in the words of Steve Cooke, “We saw a tremendous example of how youth recreational soccer should be organized. To see so many young players having such an enjoyable time, in an environment where their development is of paramount importance, was an absolute joy”. Additionally, Brian Crookham and Steve Cooke were able to conduct technical training sessions for some Downtown players during the week. All these sessions were aimed purely at improving the individual player and developing their technical competence. Following these training sessions, the Colorado Rapids staff were able to attend and assist the players during the Downtown Rapids 95 boys games in the Far West Regional League. Under the direction of Head Coach Larry Gray, the players performed superbly. After seeing the team play, Brian Crookham said, “To play so well against national caliber teams clearly shows that many players in the Las Vegas area have an outstanding future ahead of them if they continue to work hard to improve their technical ability”. For all of us at Downtown Las Vegas Rapids it has truly been an outstanding period in our club’s history. Clearly, with the partnerships we have formed in Las Vegas together with our Alliance with the Colorado Rapids, we have given thousands of players a wonderful opportunity to progress to their full potential.
